Apple has added some rather expensive headphones to its online store, with the Audeze EL-8 costing a full $799.95 and packing what Audeze claims is the world’s first fully-integrated Lightning cable.
The timing of these headphones making an appearance in the online Apple Store is a tad curious, given very recent rumors that Apple’s iPhone 7 is set to dump the infamous 3.5mm earphone jack that currently sits on the bottom of existing handsets. It’s more than likely just a coincidence, but it’s also possible that Apple chose the arrival of these rumors as a good time to start selling headphones that would work just fine with a 3.5mm earphone jack-less iPhone. We just wish they weren’t quite so expensive.
If Apple does do away with the existing 3.5mm jack, then Lightning is expected to be the way users will connect earphones and headphones moving forward. Not all will be quite so impressive as the Audeze EL-8, though, with its included Lightning cable sending a full 24-bit digital signal from the iOS device it is connected to, to the headset through a supposedly high-quality DSP and 28-bit DAC. All that apparently amounts to an $800 pair of headphones, especially when you factor in the microphone that fully supports Siri and an app for customizing the characteristics of the sound.
The EL-8 model gives you a lifelike listening experience with an extended frequency response that opens up a new breadth of sound. Its driver is four times larger than most other headphones and gives excellent bass response along with extremely low distortion. To match the EL-8’s impressive audio, its industrial design is by BMW’s DesignWorks. And durable aluminum construction ensures that you’ll have lasting enjoyment.
Those looking to splash some real cash on headphones can pick the Audeze EL-8 up from the Apple Store online with delivery expected in a couple of days. Alternatively, we’d suggest choosing to collect in-store, if only to avoid the delivery driver throwing your $800 headphones over a fence somewhere.
