Apple has stopped signing iOS 16.3.1 which means that the only shipping versions of iOS that you can install on your iPhone right now are iOS 16.4 and iOS 16.4.1.
Apple often stops signing older versions of iOS and this change comes not long after iOS 16.4 was released to the public. Apple is also already testing iOS 16.5 with developers as well as those who are on the public beta program.
That update isn’t expected to be rolled out to the iPhone-owning world for a few more weeks, however.
The iOS 16.3.1 release was made available on February 13 2022 and was a minor update which was released to help with bug fixes and improvements to security.
When a version of iOS is no longer signed by Apple it prevents people from installing it, whether that is an upgrade or downgrade from whatever software they are currently running. It does so to prevent people from installing insecure versions of iOS while also ensuring that as many people as possible are using versions of iOS with the very latest APIs and features available.
Apple is likely to announce the next big version of iOS, iOS 17, during the WWDC23 event that will kick off on June 5. That software will then go through a months-long beta process before being made available to the public in or around September.
