If you’re using an iPhone and want to downgrade to an older version of iOS, you won’t be able to do it with iOS 17.0.3. That’s after Apple took the decision to stop signing the new update following the release of IOS 17.1 recently.
Apple is already beta testing iOS 17.2 with developers but that release isn’t expected to happen until December time, leaving iOS 17.1 as the most current option.
However, there are still older versions of iOS offered for those devices that don’t support iOS 17 at all. For those iPhones, Apple continues to sign iOS 16.7.2 and iOS 15.8.
Apple routinely stops signing older versions of iOS to ensure that users aren’t able to install insecure versions of its software. That could be to prevent jailbreaking or, in most cases these days, to ensure that patched security exploits cannot be unpatched by downgrading to an older version of iOS. That prevents bad actors from being able to downgrade a device in order to gain access to it via an exploit.
Alongside the cessation of signing iOS 17.0.3, Apple is also no longer signing iOS 16.7.1, iOS 16.7, or iOS 15.7.9.
If you’re still using those versions you can continue to do so, but we’d suggest updating to a more recent version to ensure that you have access to the latest security features and fixes. Not to mention also being able to use the latest and greatest features, too.
