Apple might have only just brought 5G to the iPhone but that isn’t stopping it from already getting the wheels in motion for 6G support.
According to a new report, the company is already looking to hire engineers for the project.
Reported by Bloomberg, Apple is on the lookout for people to work in its San Diego and Silicon Valley offices.
“You will have the unique and rewarding opportunity to craft next generation wireless technology that will have deep impact on future Apple products,” according to the job announcement. “In this role you will be at the center of a cutting-edge research group responsible for creating next generation disruptive radio access technologies over the next decade.”
People hired for the positions will “research and design next generation (6G) wireless communication systems for radio access networks” and “participate in industry/academic forums passionate about 6G technology.”
Apple is sometimes accused of coming to technologies later than others, as is definitely the case with 5G. The company’s early focus on 6G could suggest that it intends to ensure that isn’t the case next time around.
The company is also working on its own cellular modems, removing the need to rely on other companies to also get their chips and antennas ready to go. That said, Apple will still need carrier partners to be on board. Apple is thought to be switching to its modems by the time 2023 rolls around.
