Apple Is Fixing AI Notification Errors With New Update

Apple is working on a fix for its AI notification system, Apple Intelligence, after it made some big mistakes particularly with news headlines.

The company told BBC News that an update will be released soon to make it clear when notifications are written by Apple Intelligence.

Available on devices with iOS 18.1 or later, Apple Intelligence summarizes notifications into one short sentence. However, it sometimes gets the details wrong. Recently, it claimed darts player Luke Littler won a tournament before it even started. Another notification falsely said former tennis player Rafael Nadal had come out as gay.

These errors upset news organizations like BBC News, which said such mistakes hurt trust in the media. Apple said the upcoming update will help users understand when a notification is created by its AI system. The company also asked users to report problems with incorrect summaries.

This isn’t the first time Apple Intelligence has made mistakes. In November, it falsely claimed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested. Last month, it said a murder suspect had shot himself, which was also untrue. Reporters Without Borders has even asked Apple to turn off the feature, saying AI isn’t ready to provide reliable news.

For now, Apple Intelligence is optional, and users can turn it off if they don’t want it. Apple says it is improving the feature based on user feedback.
