The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus continue to be the best-selling smartphones as a newly published report shows us how Apple’s iOS powered mobile phones were in the lead for handset sales in April. In contrast, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge – combined – could only follow in at second place.
The news comes in from Counterpoint, a technology market research firm, which has actually shown a positive growth for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge as the smartphones rose to the third and fourth positions in April, just 20 days after launch. However, what is more positive is that the S6 sales in this period exceeded sales of the Galaxy S5 in the same period last year, despite the S6 being launched in only 20 countries initially as compared to 125 countries for the S5.
By the end of April, it is believed that Samsung has sold about 6 million units, but according to Counterpoint, “this is about 60% of the units Samsung has shipped out of its factories. So 40% remain as inventory in the distribution channels which is not unusual for a new product in its first stages.” It is also believed that the S6 and S6 Edge are suffering from certain production constraints and it is believed by researchers at Counterpoint that if Samsung manages to iron that out “The Samsung Galaxy S6 series has a chance to become the top selling smartphone overtaking Apple’s iPhone 6 series.”
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus however, continue to maintain a healthy lead, and as per the report: “The Galaxy S6 series is mostly cannibalizing other Android phones, including Samsung’s other flagship models.” This would explain in part how the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have managed their leading positions despite being 8 months into their release. In a similar fashion to how the S6 outstripped S5 sales, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus sales were higher in April 2015 by 51-percent when compared to sales of the iPhone 5s and 5c for the same period in 2014.
Following in at fifth and sixth place are the Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 respectively, while the Microsoft Lumia 435 trails in at the tenth place unsurprisingly.
Apple managed to sell 74.5 million iPhones back in the last quarter of 2014 followed by 61.2 million units in second quarter of 2015, and in February Apple’s famed smartphone beat all Android smartphone sales combined in the United States.
