Apple Intelligence, announced at WWDC on June 10, will bring a number of AI-powered features to iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and Image Playground is one of those features.
It will allow people to create AI-generated images for sharing with others, putting into documents, and more. And now Apple has confirmed that it will make sure people know those images are indeed AI-generated.
In an interview on The Talk Show podcast, Apple VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi confirmed that Apple would add information to the images’ metadata to confirm that they were made using AI.
9to5Mac has since been able to confirm that news via a dive into the iOS 18 beta 1 code. Apple also appears to be keen to ensure that the images Apple Intelligence creates will not be misused.
To help with that, these AI-generated images will be cartoony rather than realistic. This should help ensure that the tool cannot be used to help spread misinformation, for example.
Apple Intelligence will be built into iOS 18 and Apple’s other fall software updates, but it isn’t currently available in the initial beta release and isn’t expected to be added for weeks. The final Apple Intelligence launch is expected to come this fall, but even then Apple intends to label it as a beta feature while it continues to work on improving and iterating it.
