After years of the complete opposite, Apple has now announced a new scheme that will allow independent repair shops to service iPhones that are out of warranty.
The work will be officially licensed, even though the repairers themselves aren’t Apple or an Apple authorized repair center.
The new Independent Repair Provider program gives independent shops access to the same Apple parts and training that the company’s authorized service providers have. It also means that they can access the same resources, giving them everything they need to do a thorough and professional job
The initial trial of the program included 20 stores across North America, Europe, and Asia with the United States coming fully online today. Further regions will also be given the go-ahead in the future, too.
This is undoubtedly good news for two main groups of people. Firstly, it’s good news for independent repair shops who will now be able to offer the same service, and the same parts, as Apple and its blessed service providers.
That, in turn, is great news for users who now have more places where they will be able to have an iPhone repaired. That means we won’t see as many iPhones fitted with poor quality parts, including batteries.
Apple has previously been accused of actively trying to cut independent shops out of the market. Hopefully today’s move will finally see an end to that narrative.
