If you awoke this morning to find that your Apple ID has been locked, you’re not alone. According to a report by 9to5Mac as well as many posts on social media, a number of people noted that their Apple ID was locked by the company overnight, with users having to re-enter their credentials in order to gain access.
Apple tends to lock accounts when users have entered incorrect passwords too many times, but there are other security-related reasons for such an action to be taken.
Users who have found their accounts locked this morning have been able tor again access by either re-entering their credentials or going through the identification process, including answering security questions or entering a known phone number. Some users have also had to reset their passwords, although this does not appear to have been the case for everyone.
It’s not yet clear why these accounts in particular have had their Apple IDs locked, but it’s possible that some sort of attack on a collection of accounts was noted by Apple, prompting all accounts to be locked en masse.
Thankfully, beyond a temporary loss of features such as iMessage and iCloud access, there should be no long-lasting issue once an account has been re-authenticated and a user’s identify confirmed.
Apple hasn’t yet confirmed why the mass account locking took place, or indeed that it ever happened, and we don’t expect that to change. We can however hope that this is not a sign that more accounts will be locked in the future, although it’s obviously preferable to have this happen rather than see accounts compromised.
