Apple’s iOS 18 software update was announced at WWDC this week alongside new updates for the iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro.
The Apple Intelligence launch was at the forefront of the agenda, and there was little mention of Apple HomeKit. However, there are indeed some changes coming to Apple’s smart home system despite that fact.
According to a MacRumors report there are some improvements to the way people access HomeKit devices and accessories, beginning with Customize Access. That will allow people to set custom schedules so that people will be able to use certain components of a smart home, for example when a cleaner may need access to a home but not specific rooms.
Express Mode is another access feature that will allow people with compatible Apple Watches and iPhones to unlock doors just by walking towards them, removing the need to tap their device, while Apple is also adding support for robot vacuums for the first time.
Support for vacuum cleaning, mopping, and more will be included while Siri support will also be part of the equation.
The iOS 18 software update is currently in the hands of developers and will be released as a public beta next month. From there, the update will be released to the public this fall likely around the same time as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
