Epic’s lawsuit against Apple is already proving to be a fun one to watch and now the App Store gatekeeper has bitten back at the Fortnite developer, saying that its CEO asked for special treatment. Fortnite is no longer available on the App Store after it was removed following Epic’s decision to violate App Store rules.
In its filing, Apple has told the court that Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wanted it to treat Epic differently to everyone else, producing some emails to try and back that up.
“On June 30, 2020, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney wrote my colleagues and me an email asking for a ‘side letter’ from Apple that would create a special deal for only Epic that would fundamentally change the way in which Epic offers apps on Apple’s iOS platform,” Apple’s former Senior Vice President Phil Schiller wrote in a declaration.
Epic was apparently looking to be allowed to bypass Apple’s App Store in-app purchase systems, something Apple says would have made it a special deal.
However, Sweeney has hit back via Twitter, saying that Epic didn’t want a special deal at all. It wants all developers to be able to work outside of Apple’s in-app purchase framework.
There’s no way this ends soon with both Apple and Epic seemingly content to throw mud at each other. Meanwhile, publishers and other app developers are circling, apparently sensing blood in the water. Apple’s App Store processes and rules have become quite the talking point of late, with many believing Apple’s anti-competitive and monopolistic rules are harming to third parties.
