Apple has removed the $19.99 download fee associated with OS X Lion and OS X Mountain Lion, making them both free to download for the first time.
The move was first spotted by Macworld and it isn’t entirely clear when the change took place. The software is kept around in case people with older Macs need it, but until both releases required a $19.99 payment to download. That’s no longer the case.
OS X Lion requires the following specifications in order to work.
- Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
- OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later or OS X Lion 10.7 already installed
- 2GB of memory
OS X Mountain Lion also requires Lion to be installed, as well as the following hardware.
- OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion 10.7, or Mountain Lion 10.8 already installed
- 2 GB of memory
- 8 GB of available space
Any Mac that shipped with Mac OS X Mavericks or newer are not compatible with these downloads, however, so that might be something worth keeping in mind. That also happens to be the release where Apple stopped charging for updates.
Microsoft is now following a similar model to Apple and will offer Windows 11 free to everyone who is running a previous version of Windows on their PC.
