Many consumers complain when it takes third-party developers an eternity to update their apps for new devices and screen sizes. Those complaints are even worse when it’s actually Apple who prolongs the update.
Now, after almost a year in existence, Apple has finally updated its AirPort Utility app to offer iPhone X support.
The update comes at a time when many consumers are actually looking forward to the announcement and release of Apple’s 2018 iPhone flagship, likely to be called iPhone Xs. That means that iPhone X has been in existence for close to twelve months and that you would normally expect Apple to have improved and updated all of their apps to support iPhone X and its larger display. That clearly hasn’t happened with Apple still pushing out updates, with Airport Utility being the latest to receive the iPhone X treatment.
In fact, the AirPort Utility app appears to have been Apple’s focus in recent days and weeks despite the product itself being discontinued. There has clearly been some work going on behind the scenes for a while which has manifested itself in the form of an app update as well as firmware updates for the now-defunct AirPort Express. The latest is this iPhone X display and form factor update for the app, with the last release coming as a firmware update to the 2nd-gen AirPort Express to bring AirPlay 2 support for the end-of-line hardware. That was actually quite a surprising update but an extremely welcome one nonetheless. In fact, that’s exactly how this latest AirPort Utility update will be received. Surprising and unexpected, but very welcome.
As far as functionality goes, this update doesn’t detract from the fact that the AirPort Utility app is still used to control and manage the Wi-Fi network on a range of hardware, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Apple’s AirPort Time Capsule.
Given the fact that Apple has discontinued its AirPort base station range, it remains to be seen how long the company will continue offering support for this app. It certainly won’t be introducing any new features but given that firmware updates are continuing for the AirPort hardware it makes perfect sense that Apple will continue to at least offer compatibility updates. Albeit extremely delayed.
