After years of refusing to do so, Apple is finally allowing game emulators into the App Store for the first time.
Previously, installing a game emulator would have required doing so via a third-party app store in the EU, while the option wasn’t available at all in the rest of the world.
Now, everyone globally will be able to get their game emulation apps from the official Apple App Store.
Apple confirmed the change in an update to its App Store review guidelines while a post to the Apple Developer blog also confirmed the change.
“The App Review Guidelines have been revised to support updated policies, upcoming features, and to provide clarification,” Apple said in the blog post before detailing that it has tweaked Music streaming Services Entitlements as well as adding the new gaming option.
Added games from retro game console emulator apps to the list of permitted software, and clarifies that mini apps and mini games must be HTML5.
There have long been complaints that Apple has been working against gaming companies, including cloud gaming companies, by preventing some sorts of apps into the App Store. Cloud gaming apps have already been allowed as part of a raft of recent changes, and now fans of game emulation apps will presumably soon have new options on the iPhone, too.
