Apple has expanded the number of self-driving cars it has on the roads of California to 69 with 92 drivers, according to a new report.
According to numbers shared by MacReports after collating them from the California DMV, Apple is now one of the biggest companies in terms of the number of cars it has on the streets. According to the report, Apple now has almost 100 cars drivers in charge of its cars, more than most companies.
In May, we reported that Apple had increased their number of self-driving cars, and yet cut their number of drivers by half. Now, according to the California DMV, a little more than two months later, we see that Apple has added another car to its fleet for a total of 69 vehicles with an autonomous vehicle permit registered with the California DMV. They have also added back a significant number of drivers since May. They now, as of July 30th, have 92 driver permits – up from 76 in May. The number of drivers is still down significantly from October 2020 when we reported that Apple had 154 driver permits.
The only companies with more cars on the road right now are Cruise with 201 and Waymo with a massive 615. Nvidia has a ton of drivers — 196 — despite only having 16 cars registered for use on Californian roads.
We still don’t know what Apple has in store for its self-driving technology, of course.
Recent rumors had the company looking for a manufacturing partner, although it isn’t clear how that panned out. Hyundai was one company Apple was thought to be working with at one point, as well as KIA.
