Now that Apple has finally taken the wraps off the new iPhone SE we’re seeing what else that means for the iPhone lineup. The most obvious repercussion is the fact that Apple’s iPhone 8 is no more, and as a result, so is the iPhone 8 Plus – sort of.
The second generation of the iPhone SE is effectively an iPhone 8 in many ways.
It has the same LCD screen measuring 4.7 inches diagonally and there’s the same Home button with Touch ID, too. Where things differ is inside, with the iPhone SE packing the super-fast A13 Bionic processor.
Ultimately it made little sense to keep the iPhone 8 around given the starting iPhone SE price of just $399. But what of the iPhone 8 Plus? Now that’s gone there’s no 5.5-inch iPhone in Apple’s lineup for the first time since the iPhone 6.
There have been claims that the iPhone SE was to have a Plus variant but that it simply wasn’t ready for market. That seems unlikely – with the iPhone SE clearly ready for sale, what would make the iPhone SE Plus so difficult to prepare? That said though, the iPhone 8 Plus is said to be still sold and made available through select partners for the time being.
It’s also more likely that Apple would rather people upgrade to the iPhone XR or iPhone 11, but we’ll know more about the company’s long-term plans once September rolls around and we hear about the iPhone 12.
