Apple made its two new dual-port power adapters available for order yesterday and while we already knew that they would support up to 35W, we didn’t know how that would work when both ports are used at the same time. Now, we do.
Apple has shared a new support document that explains that the chargers themselves will intelligently distribute power between the two ports depending on what is plugged into them.
Plugging a low-power device like an Apple Watch or AirPods into one of the ports will give the other part the lion’s share of the power, for example.
Apple explains the various scenarios and how its power adapters will respond.
- If you connect a Mac notebook and an iPhone or iPad, each device receives up to 17.5W.
- If you connect an iPhone and an iPad, each device receives up to 17.5W.
- If you connect a Mac notebook or iPhone and an Apple Watch or AirPods, the Mac notebook or iPhone receives up to 27.5W and the Apple Watch or AirPods receive up to 7.5W.
Both of the new adapters have two USB-C ports and cost $59. The only difference is the fact one of the adapters is smaller than the other and features foldable prongs to make it easier to travel with. You can order both power adapters form Apple’s website right now with speedy delivery, too.
