If you’ve ever bought an iPhone from the Apple Store and found it running an outdated version of iOS, you’re going to be pleased to know that Apple seems to have a solution for that and it’s coming soon.
That solution, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, will see Apple Stores use a new device that will automatically update iPhones without ever having to break the seal on their boxes.
The result, Gurman teases via the weekly Power On newsletter, is that no iPhone will need to be updated immediately once taken out of its box.
The system will reportedly allow Apple to power devices on before updating them and then even power them back off entirely remotely. Gurman also believes that Apple intends to start rolling the new updating “pad” out to stores before the end of this year.
Apple is planning a new system for its retail stores that will update the software on iPhones prior to sale. The company has developed a proprietary pad-like device that the store can place boxes of iPhones on top of. That system can then wirelessly turn on the iPhone, update its software and then power it back down — all without the phone’s packaging ever being opened.
If this all comes to pass it will mean that those buying a new iPhone when the iPhone 16 rolls around will not be faced with a problem they had this year. The iPhone 15 required an immediate update to allow them to be properly set up by those looking to restore from an old device. If this new feature arrives, updates like that one will be automatically installed before the iPhone ever goes on sale.
