Apple CEO says that the potential for AI is “very interesting” but admitted that there are a “number of issues that need to be sorted” out with regards to its implementation.
Cook went on to say that it’s “very important to be deliberate and thoughtful” about how AI is implemented amid reports that Apple’s AI work has been hampered by its reluctance to go all-in on the technology.
Generative AI has become a huge topic of discussion for the tech world since OpenAI made the ChatGPT offering available to the public.
That and other chatbots have shown how capable they can be while Siri continues to be lampooned for its inability to often follow the most simple of tasks or requests. Cook did say that Apple will start to add AI to its products on a “very thoughtful basis.”
Cook was speaking during Apple’s quarterly earnings call which itself comes just a month before Apple is expected to announce a raft of new software updates for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. It’s as-yet unclear whether we can look forward to any notable Siri upgrades, but reports claiming Apple’s stance on privacy has hampered development suggests not. It’s thought that Apple is so keen to ensure that data remains on a user’s device that it is preventing engineers from improving Siri.
The new software updates are expected to be announced during the WWDC23 opening keynote on June 5.
