Apple, Canon, And Blackmagic Announce New Cameras Designed To Capture Spatial And Immersive Video

Apple’s WWDC event saw a number of new software and services announcements, but the company also shared details of a partnership with Canon that will see the company produce a camera designed to capture spatial videos.

Those videos can then be played in 3D on Apple Vision Pro headsets. Blackmagic Design also announced a new camera of its own designed to capture immersive video.

Apple announced the Canon RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens that is designed to be used with the Canon EOS R7 camera body and promises dual lenses that will mimic a person’s eyes.

The move will then allow the camera to capture video that will be used to produce 3D content for viewing on the Apple Vision Pro.

In a post on the X social network, Blackmagic Design also announced the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive, a camera that is built for capturing immersive content at 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye.

The camera also boasts 16 stops of dynamic range for 90fps stereoscopic 3D immersive cinema content, and we can expect to be able to buy the camera later in 2024.

These mark the first moves by camera makers to produce hardware that is designed with the Apple Vision Pro at the forefront of its thinking. Details such as pricing and actual release date aren’t yet available, however.
