With Google’s big I/O developer event just around the corner all eyes are on the company to see where it takes Android in particular. Many expect Google to announced Android M at the event, the latest and greatest version of Google’s mobile operating system. Alongside that though there are rumors abound that big changes are coming to Google+, with the spinoff of photos being one that could be most pertinent given the chances of Android M putting in an appearance.
As the hours tick away and Android M gets closer, screenshots have appeared online which appear to show Android M’s new Photos app in all its glory. It looks like the aptly named Photos app could be the Google+ feature that some people know and love but in a standalone app form, with Google seeking to strip Google+ bare of anything useful. Even if Google+ has been a failed experiment in the eyes of many, its photo features have been a real plus.
One of those features, Auto Awesome, appears to be in this leaked Photos app although it is now called ‘Assistant.’ While it is true that we don’t know for sure what this app actually is, at this point it is becoming increasingly clear that it will ship alongside Google’s Android M whenever that may be.
With new gestures apparently developed for the app, features such as stitching and face recognition are likely to put in an appearance, and even though this new Photos app is set to debut for Android M initially we would not be at all surprised to see it make the jump to older versions of the mobile operating system. Furthermore, an iOS version of Google’s new Photos app may not be completely out of the question either.
Google tends to give its big new Android releases an outing at its Google I/O event, and with the latest version – Android M – set to get its first public outing in the coming days we can only guess at what desert that ‘M’ stands for.
Marshmallow, perhaps?
