Three months since its release, Android 5.0 Lollipop is running on almost less than 0.1% of devices which received the update, says Google itself. For those who have been following Android closely since it was first released, this news shouldn’t be too surprising. More on this right after the jump.
Released in mid-October last year, Lollipop is supposed to be one of the most extensive updates to the Android platform since Ice Cream Sandwich was released, with the much hyped Material Design, and bunch of other improvements and features under the hood.
All that is nice, but it would be nicer if the update actually found its way on to Android devices sooner than the wait which seems to have become a trend every time Google releases a new major update to the Android OS. According to Google’s own official data which showcases the breakdown of all OS version installations up till the 5th of January 2015, Android 5.0 Lollipop doesn’t even make the cut for being displayed in the distribution chart given how it’s running on less than 0.1% of devices.
Android 4.1 through 4.3 Jelly Bean and Android 4.4 KitKat seem to be prevalent as the two versions of the mobile OS that are running on almost 85% of the devices. Jelly Bean is still leading with 46% with KitKat coming in at 39.1% which is an increase from 33.9% just last month.
So where is Lollipop? Shipping with the newest Nexus devices and rolled out as an update to the rest of the Nexus family down to the Nexus 4, Lollipop has also found its way onto the Samsung Galaxy S5 as well, albeit in three markets only; South Korea, Poland and Spain. That’s not even one-fourth of all the Android devices, and while we can understand that Lollipop is set to be rolled out to only a handful of supported handsets and tablets, that still leaves a huge chunk of those without the Lollipop goodness.
HTC One M7 and M8 are also to receive the Lollipop update and while HTC has given an official time-frame, there’s still some wait. The same holds true for the LG G3 which hasn’t received the Lollipop update as yet. I can go on naming flagship models from other manufacturers, and this is precisely what drives the sales of these Nexus family of devices.
