Google has today made Android 11 available to everyone following four developer previews and an additional three public betas. The update is already rolling out to those who own Google’s Pixel phones.
In addition to Google’s phones, some Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo handsets will also be getting a version of Android 11 as well.
This update brings with it a few new features, with Google saying that the way people have conversations is changing. Messages now have a space all to themselves inside the notification shade, and chat heads are back.
Google is also trying to make it easier for people to use their smart homes as well, with thermostats and other smart devices now directly accessible by pressing and holding on the phone’s power button.
There’s also the addition of a new wireless version of Android Auto as well, removing the need for a cable. Another example of Android further catching up with Apple’s CarPlay implementation.
Android 11 also adds new privacy features, not least the ability to grant an app access to specific features once, when needed. That means you can give an app access to your location once and then prevent it from accessing it in the future. With Google and Android constantly maligned for their privacy issues, this is a big deal and it’s one that developers are going to have to come to terms with.
