Analyst: New 27-Inch mini-LED iMac With ProMotion Expected Early 2022

Apple will launch a new 27-inch iMac with a mini-LED screen and new ProMotion technology in early 2022, according to a new report from display analyst Ross Young. Young works for Display Supply Chain Consultants and has proven accurate in the past.

According to Young, via a conversation with MacRumors, Apple will launch the new, larger iMac in the first quarter of next year.

Young told MacRumors that the 27-inch display for the iMac will feature mini-LED backlighting, which likely means that it will have XDR branding. Young tweeted that Apple is currently planning to release the new iMac in the first quarter of 2022.

Young also says that the new iMac will feature 120Hz ProMotion technology, including a variable refresh rate that will allow the display to refresh at just 24Hz when needed. No resolution information was given, but the current 27-inch iMac has a 5K panel.

Apple already uses mini-LED technology in an iPad Pro and the newly-announced MacBook Pro, and it seems to be a manufacturing mechanism that is preferred by Apple, rather than using OLED.

Apple has already refreshed the 24-inch iMac with new Apple silicon but the 27-inch version still uses Intel chips. It isn’t clear what chips Apple will use in a new 27-inch iMac, although some form of Apple silicon seems highly likely.
