iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have only been out in the public domain for a matter of weeks, and iPhone XR isn’t even out yet, so, of course, it makes perfect sense to start the 2019 iPhone predictions. Sarcasm aside, well-respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has done exactly that, predicting that Apple will continue to offer three iPhone models as part of next year’s refresh.
In fairness to Kuo, and the whole prediction community in general, the TF International Securities analyst wasn’t specifically making a point about Apple’s 2019 lineup but was instead referencing the release of Luxshare’s predicted market share, whereby he was able to put a note together for investors which reference Apple’s potential 2019 plans.
As part of that note, Kuo has suggested that Apple will follow a similar pattern in 2019 by releasing 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch devices with an embedded OLED display as well as an LCD-based device which sits in the middle with a 6.1-inch display.
If accurate, it’s identical to what has been announced this year with Apple’s iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the soon-to-be-released iPhone XR. Incidentally, for those that may be new to iPhone, it’s the latter iPhone XR which will ship later this month with the 6.1-inch “Liquid Retina” display based on LCD display technology.
Many individuals and well-placed analysts in the tech community have been talking about Apple’s 2019 iPhone lineup, but this is the first time that we know of that an analyst has stepped out into the public domain and put their beliefs and predictions on record. Of course, given that we are 10-months away from an announcement, this is still subject to change.
It will also be extremely interesting to see if next year’s devices come with a major upgrade in terms of physical design language and internal functionality and capability. iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max are this year’s “S” upgrade, which means that they offer a real benefit to consumers but don’t particularly come with any major upgrade that will blow the mind of consumers and differentiate it hugely from last year’s iPhone X model.
Moving into 2019, we can hope to see Apple pushing the boundaries again, and releasing devices which really give us the sense that the iPhone-maker is trying to continue pushing the envelope.
