Amazon has confirmed that phase one of its Matter rollout is complete, adding that the second phase will begin soon and will add support for Echo devices to iPhones and iPads.
The initial phase one rollout was designed to ensure that Echo devices all worked with the most common devices, Amazon says, including support for Android compatibility.
The result is that tens of millions of customers can now connect their Echo devices to the Matter system in their home.
Last month, we announced our plans to deliver a high-quality Matter customer experience by the end of this year. Today, we’re excited to share that we completed the first phase of our Matter rollout. Tens of millions of Alexa customers across the globe now have more ways to connect their devices with the availability of Matter over WiFi spanning 17 different Echo devices, Plugs, Switches, and Bulbs with Android setup.
The second phase will bring support for more devices, including compatibility with the Thread protocol as well as iPhones and iPads. Phase 2 doesn’t have a date yet, but Amazon says that it will be confirmed during CES 2023 which kicks off on January 5.
The addition of Matter support means that smart home accessories can work together regardless of whether they were built for HomeKit, Google Assistant, or Alexa and should ensure it’s easier to make accessories talk to existing systems.
