Following a report last week that had Apple and Amazon thrashing out a deal that would see Amazon Prime Video coming to the Apple TV later this year, BuzzFeed is today confirming that not only are talks happening but that an agreement has been reached.
That agreement will not only see Amazon’s streaming video service finally pop up on new Apple TVs, presumably via the App Store, but will also result in the Apple TV itself once again becoming available for purchase from Amazon’s web stores. This has not been the case since back in 2015: “As part of the arrangement between the two companies, Amazon — which stopped selling Apple TV devices two years ago, when it also banned Google’s Chromecast devices from its virtual shelves — will resume selling Apple’s set-top box.”
Apple’s WWDC keynote is scheduled for Monday, June 5 at 10AM PT, and it is this event that will reportedly see the new deal announced, with the app demonstrated live on stage, though BuzzFeed’s report does not mention a window for the Apple TV’s return to Amazon’s web store.
The deal will be mutually beneficial for both Apple and Amazon, with the arrival of Amazon Prime Video on the device being a big deal for users of that particular service. The return of the Apple TV to Amazon’s web outlets is also pretty huge – not only does it allow Apple to have another avenue for selling a product that needs all the help it can get, but Amazon will now also be able to make money on an Apple product that was previously out of reach. Mutually beneficial is a term that was almost created for this deal.
If Amazon does make an appearance at WWDC, it will have to contend with the likes of iOS 11, macOS 10.13 and potential hardware releases if it is to make sure it gets some headlines of its own.
