Apparently keen to make sure that everyone realizes that it’s not only Apple who can release product updates this week, Amazon has announced a refresh to its entry-level Kindle. The update brings a new built-in light, although that’s the only real change of note.
Beyond the light, Amazon says that there have been some slight changes to the overall design of the kindle in order to make it more comfortable to hold. To look at, it’s almost impossible to see any difference although we’ll take Amazon’s word for it.
One thing that has definitely changed, however, is the price. Amazon has increased the price of the entry-level Kindle by $10, meaning you have to hand over $89.99 to get into a Kindle these days, and that’s with ads thrown in, too.
If you’re wondering whether the built-in light means you should get this over the most costly Paperwhite, the answer is no, you shouldn’t. The Paperwhite is still the best option in our book, if only thanks to its 300ppi display when compared to the lackluster 167ppi of the newly updated Kindle. The Paperwhite also just looks nicer, thanks to its flush display. It’s also worth noting that the standard Kindle isn’t water resistant, unlike the rest of the Kindle lineup.
If you really must go for the standard Kindle, you can pre-order it today with devices expected to start shipping on April 10th.
There’s a trade-in offer for anyone with older devices, too, so if an upgrade is in the cards you could get a discount on your new e-reader as well as an Amazon Gift Card thrown in for good measure.
