Amazon has today confirmed that it will be adding Matter smart home support to as many as 17 different Echo devices including smart speakers and displays.
The company will be pushing software updates out over the next month, it says.
The news, reported by The Verge, means that Echo devices will make use of the new Matter support that is also coming to a swathe of other smart devices from a variety of manufacturers.
The idea is that any device that supports Matter will work just as well with HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and other platforms. However, Amazon has also confirmed that the Matter rollout for Echo devices will be tied to Android initially.
Amazon says that it will need to update more than 100 million devices across Echo and Eero, meaning it needs to take a phased approach to make sure that it can get everything updated eventually. That means that iOS devices and Thread networking will have to wait until early next year, unfortunately.
Amazon is also pointing the finger at Apple’s requirements, saying that it needs access to new APIs that Apple has only just made available. A a result, the company says that it intends to take the time to test all integrations to ensure that there will be no issues.
Once Amazon’s testing has been done, the Thread and Matter update will roll out to iOS users, although no hard release window has been given.
