WinterBoard’s sheer dominance in the iOS jailbreak theming market is, so far, unmatched. But in recent times, DreamBoard has emerged a veritable challenger to the undisputed champion. And today, that challenger has gone free.
DreamBoard was released back in March. The entrance fee to it was rather high as it cost a relatively whopping $2.99. I call $2.99 relatively whopping since, its direct competitor, WinterBoard was and is completely free. The price was one of the main reasons why DreamBoard never really took off.
DreamBoard is a very powerful theming platform for the iPhone and iPod touch (not all themes support iPad). It has a handful of really unique features that really set it apart from WinterBoard:
DreamBoard lets you place anything from widgets to apps where ever you want. Theming is no longer limited to just icons, or having to resort to complicated setup themes involving Iconoclasm, SpringJumps, etc.
DreamBoard makes it easy to switch between any theme in just a few seconds. Simply launch, choose and apply! And, DreamBoard eliminates the long wait of having to restart Springboard every time you make a change. No more resprings!
While WinterBoard has a more modular (component by component) way of tweaking iOS’ looks, DreamBoard handles things by applying themes in a more deeper sense as it drastically changes the entire UI.
So you’ve got themes that apply an Android-like makeup on iOS (pictured above), themes that are inspired by Windows Phone 7 (pictured below) and other “inspired” themes you can install separately.
The second feature that sets it apart is how there is absolutely no need to respring your iOS device after changing themes. Once you’ve launched DreamBoard’s app, all you have to do is swipe to a desired theme, tap Apply and you zoom right in to the new theme; no tedious restarts or resprings required!
If you are a theming junkie and you haven’t tried the tweak yet, we really suggest you do. Here’s a demo video of it if you aren’t convinced yet:
Since DreamBoard is a jailbreak tweak , you must jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch to install it. If you’re running iOS 4.3.3, you can use Redsn0w to perform an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4 (GSM), iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G/4G.
If you’re on iOS 5, you may use RedSn0w for Mac/Windows or Sn0wbreeze. Either program works. Both jailbreaks will be tethered. Untethered jailbreak is available only for iPhone 3GS.
DreamBoard can be installed from Cydia for free under ModMyi repository. It comes with a free copy of Endroid, which is an HTC Sense-like theme for iOS.
