All of the rumors leading up to the 2018 iPhone launch just about agree that we will see three new handsets launch, two of which will ship with the OLED screens used in the iPhone X with the third being a more budget friendly LCD option, likely sized at or around 6.1-inches.
This is something that has remained the line coming out of most corners of the internet for a while now, but what about next year? A new report by South Korea’s ET News adds additional credence to previous claims that 2019 will be the year where Apple goes all-in on OLED for its iPhones.
According to the report. the iPhones announced in 2019 will all ship with OLED screens included, at least that’s the plan if up to three new iPhones are announced. If there are four, the report notes, then all bets are off. Google Translate provided the below quote, so keep that in mind when reading.
“Apple recently started planning the iPhone model in 2019 and decided to adopt OLED in all three types,” said an official from Apple who said, “The OLED used in the iPhone X (TEN) is a low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) LCD Quality, performance, and so on.”
Another official said, “Apple has decided to put all the OLED on the new iPhone model in 2019.” If the new model is more than three kinds, the LCD model may be maintained. However.
This rumor is not really telling us anything previous rumors haven’t posited, but as ever the more sources suggest the same thing the more likely it is that there is something to the story.
This particular story also seems to have some worried, with shares in Japan Display falling as much as 20% based on the news. Japan Display currently provides LCD screens for Apple’s iPhone and although it too is moving towards OLED, it is unlikely to have fully ramped up production until early 2019.
