All iPhone 17 Models To Reportedly Feature ProMotion Displays

Reports suggest that ProMotion displays might be included across the entire iPhone 17 lineup, marking a significant upgrade for Apple’s non-Pro models.

Display analyst Ross Young hinted at this earlier, and now supply-chain sources are backing it up.

Reports indicate that the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will finally gain access to this flagship feature, which has so far been exclusive to the Pro models. A Weibo leak from Digital Chat Station—known for accurate predictions—also aligns with these claims, suggesting high refresh rates for the standard iPhone 17 series.

ProMotion is Apple’s variable refresh-rate display technology, powered by LTPO (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) OLED panels. ProMotion allows the screen to dynamically adjust its refresh rate from as low as 1Hz to as high as 120Hz, depending on the content.

This technology brings three major benefits:

  • Battery life boost: It conserves power by lowering the refresh rate when fewer updates are needed.
  • Enhanced visuals: At 120Hz, animations, scrolling, and gameplay feel smoother and more responsive.
  • Always-on display: A 1Hz rate allows features like the always-on display to operate with minimal battery impact.

This upgrade couldn’t come at a better time, as Android competitors in lower price brackets have already embraced variable refresh-rate technology. With ProMotion potentially standard across the board, the iPhone 17 lineup is shaping up to be a game-changer for 2024.
