Apple is gearing up to launch AirTag 2, and it’s expected to drop around mid-next year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
While the new version won’t look drastically different, it’s set to bring three key improvements to the table.
The original AirTag debuted in early 2021 after years of speculation and leaks. Back in 2019, we caught wind of its development under the codename “B389,” thanks to hints buried in iOS 13.
The upcoming AirTag 2 is codenamed “B589” and, per Gurman, has already passed through some manufacturing tests. So, it’s safe to say the next-gen tracker is on its way, with improvements in three key areas:
- Better range
- Upgraded wireless chip
- Enhanced privacy features
The first two upgrades are no-brainers, improving the device’s performance and connectivity. But the privacy boost is particularly noteworthy. Gurman highlights that AirTags have been misused for stalking, with some even tampering with the device to silence its speaker. Apple seems to be taking these issues seriously, aiming to make AirTag 2 safer and more secure.
It’ll be interesting to see how Apple addresses these privacy concerns while maintaining the core functionality that made AirTag so popular in the first place.
