Apple may not be selling its AirPort Extreme or AirPort Time Capsules anymore, but it’s still updating the software for them. The company has released AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.9.1.
According to an accompanying support document, the new update works to fix a number of security issues impacting the affected models.
Apple officially discontinued the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule more than a year ago, although some stock did linger in stores and online for some time after that. All stock is now gone however, and it’s promising to see Apple continuing to release software updates for hardware it no longer makes.
Ever since Apple stopped selling its own WiFi hardware the market has been looking for a company to step up and replace its easy-to-use devices. So far companies like Eero and Netgear have come close, although nobody has quite managed to come up with anything quite as manageable of the AirPort devices.
There are some who still haven’t come to terms with Apple’s decision to exit the WiFi market, but at this point it doesn’t look even remotely likely that the company will rekindle the AirPort name.
This software update comes on the eve of what is sure to be Apple’s biggest software event of the year. Apple will announce a raft of new software updates at WWDC starting June 3rd, with new versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS all expected to be outed for the first time.
