Apple often releases updated firmware for the AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max, but those updates are installed in a non-conventional way.
Rather than being installed directly, they’re installed via a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac. And that’s a problem for people who don’t have one of those devices.
Now, Apple has updated its AirPods firmware support document to make it clear that people without an additional Apple device can now visit an Apple Store to get the update installed. It isn’t clear what process will be followed for that to happen, however.
If you don’t have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware.
The same document also now includes clarification on how firmware updates are installed normally, with the method requiring that AirPods are connected to a charger and are within range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is also connected to WiFi. If those conditions are not met the AirPods firmware will not be updated.
While going to an Apple Store just to update the firmware on AirPods isn’t ideal, it’s the only way that it can be done by people who use AirPods with Android phones and Windows computers.
