The king of the electronic reading gadgets is arguably the Amazon Kindle. The device is perfectly sized and has the gorgeous E Ink display that makes reading a pleasure in all conditions. However, if iOS is your platform of choice for reading through your electronic library, then we can now add an additional reading option to the list thanks to the release of the Reader app from Sony.
iOS users already have the option of using Apple’s own iBooks solution, as well as extremely capable and popular apps from the likes of Amazon, Google and the makers of the Nook, Barnes & Noble. With so many large and successful entities already offering very powerful and competent reading apps that hook into individual accounts, it may seem a little strange for Sony to throw their hat into the ring. With that said, the Reader app gives Reader Store account holders a seamless way to enjoy their content on an iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
The app works in the same manner as any other book reading app. Logging into an existing Sony account will download all purchased materials that are associated with that account and make them immediately available across multiple devices running the new Reader app. Although the release of the Reader eBooks app will be greeted with delight from those who religiously use their Reader Store account to purchase books, they shouldn’t expect miracles from the app as it is very simple and straightforward creation, falling in line with the majority of other readers available.
It’s unknown at the moment how many people will actually use Sony’s new creation for iOS, but in order to entice users in, the company is also offering an exclusive short story from author Kim Harrison for those who adopt the app early.
Downloading the app during the offer period will automatically download the free book and place it in the user’s library on the device. Like a lot of other companies, Sony is heading in the direction of understanding that variety is important and are attempting to make their media services available across as many devices and platforms as possible. This can only be a good thing for users, especially the ones who don’t use dedicated eBook reading devices like the Kindle or Sony’s own E Ink readers.
