Owners of the redesigned Model S and Model X electric vehicles have long been able to play Steam games thanks to their support for a dedicated gaming GPU and a whopping 16GB of RAM.
However, Tesla later stopped including that GPU in its vehicles which also meant that Steam was no longer an option in new S/X as well. Now, there’s a suggestion things could be changing.
Tesla launched a Steam app for the Model S and Model X back in the 2022 Holiday Update, and now a new NotaTeslaApp report suggests that similar support could be on the way back. Valve has recently updated compatible Tesla vehicles to SteamOS 3.6 which is the same version that is available to owners of Valve’s Steam Deck portable PC gaming console. There are performance improvements in the update, but no visual changes or additional features.
The report goes on to note that the newer Tesla vehicles with AMD chips inside could potentially offer Steam compatibility in the future similar to that of the Steam Deck due to the similarities in architecture.
Let’s take a look at the Steam Deck – according to Valve, its onboard Zen4 CPU and GPU combined push a total of 2 TFlops of data, which is fairly respectable, but much lower than today’s home consoles. The Steam Deck is capable of 720p gaming fairly seamlessly on low-to-medium settings on the go and is also built on the AMD platform.
The fact that Valve has updated a defunct Steam app for the Teslas that do support it might suggest that something is afoot and that the software could also come to other vehicles in the future, including 3/Y/Cybertruck. There is little concrete information to suggest that right now though, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground should any pop up.
