Tesla provided an update about its next electric vehicle during its 2023 Q3 earnings call but information about what that vehicle will be or what it will have to offer have so far been hard to come by. But information is starting to pop up.
CEO Elon Musk mentioned the vehicle during the 2024 shareholder meeting while also confirming that the company is working on a budget option as well as a larger SUV.
Now, Chinese outlet CNMO Technology News reports that Travis Axelrod, Tesla’s Head of Investor Relations, has announced the company’s plans for a new EV. The news was shared at an investor conference hosted by Deutsche Bank earlier this month.
Based on the information then shared by NotaTeslaApp, the vehicle is being designed under the Project Redwood and Model Q monikers and is set to cost under $30,000. In terms of specs, it’s thought that the Model Q will be around 15% smaller and 30% lighter than the popular Model 3 which means that it is definitely not going to be a big vehicle.
The battery is also expected to be smaller as you might expect, with a 53 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in the base model. An AWD version is expected to include a 75 kWh LFP battery, with claims of up to 310 miles of travel per charge being touted.
No final pricing is of course available yet, and it remains to be seen how much of this data is accurate or indeed whether Tesla’s plans change before the vehicle is released.
