Google today announced the new Pixel 9 lineup of Android phones including support for new Gemini AI features.
The lineup consists of Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Pro XL.
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are offered with 6.3-inch and 6.8-inch display sizes, respectively, while the entry-level Pixel 9 has a 6.3-inch display for those who don’t need the power of the Pro model. The Pixel 9 Pro also has a 6.3-inch cover display, while the unfolded device reveals an iPad mini-like 8-inch display.
All of the new models feature improved displays and a new camera bar around the back, while the Google Tesnor G4 chip will be the silicon that powers the new Gemini AI capabilities. Google says that the Pixel will come with 12GB of RAM while the Pro models will increase that to 16GB, offering more than enough for speedy AI processing as well as app and game performance.
With Apple Intelligence set to launch later this year, it’s the Google Gemini AI functionality that is going to get plenty of attention. It’s designed to integrate with Google’s main apps while Gemini Live will be available on the Pro models only. That’ll be a subscription offering that will offer a “mobile conversational experience” and allow people to work with text, images, or their voice. Other features include the usual AI-based photo magic that the Pixel phones are so famous for, including a new Add Me feature that uses AR to add the photographer to the photo they just took.
In terms of pricing, the entry-level Pixel 9 starts at $799 while the Pixel 9 Pro starts at the higher $999 price point. Those choosing the larger Pixel 9 Pro will need to pay at least $1,099 while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold starts at $1,799.
Alongside the new phones, Google also announced new Pixel Buds Pro 2 earbuds (priced at $229) as well as the Pixel Watch 3, a new model that will run for up to 36 hours on a single charge while offering all of the usual health and fitness tracking features you’d expect from a $349.99 watch.
