When Apple announced the watchOS 11 software update during the WWDC 2024 opening event on June 10 the release was joined by new updates for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac among other platforms.
And while the watchOS 11 update isn’t the biggest we’ve seen come to the Apple Watch in recent years there are still some notable upgrades. However, some of them will only come to specific Apple Watch models.
The watchOS 11 update will be available on the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) as well as the Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. Both the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Ultra 2 will also receive the update.
However, despite that fact, there are some limitations. For example, the Tap to Cash feature for sending and receiving Apple Cash will not work on the Apple Watch Series 6.
Similarly, the Apple Watch SE won’t support the Apple Home Key feature that allows HomeKit door locks to be unlocked by proximity to a compatible wearable. Because the Apple Watch SE doesn’t have an ultra wideband chip, the wearable doesn’t support this feature.
The watchOS 11 software update is currently available in beta form, but only to developers. Those who want to install the new software on their own Apple Watch will have to wait until this fall, likely in or around the September timeframe that will also see new models announced.
We expect the Apple Watch X and Apple Watch Ultra 3 to be announced alongside the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro devices in that month.
