Apple has announced numerous new accessibility upgrades that are set to launch later this year, likely as part of the iOS 18 software update that we expect to be made available to the public in September.
One of the new features is one that will allow iPhone and iPad owners to be able to change the phrase that they use when getting Siri’s attention.
Current users can say “Hey Siri” or just “Siri” to begin an interaction with the digital assistant. However, with the arrival of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 it appears that people will finally be able to choose their own phrase instead. That means that people could potentially say “Hey, iPhone,” or something similar and have Siri pay attention.
With Vocal Shortcuts, iPhone and iPad users can assign custom utterances that Siri can understand to launch shortcuts and complete complex tasks.
Apple hasn’t given any more details on what the feature will be or how it will work, but screenshots shared with the Apple Newsroom post showed that people will have to say a phrase three times during configuration in order for Siri to understand what it is.
If Apple stuck to a tried and tested release method of previous iOS updates we can expect that it will share details of the new software at WWDC on June 10. From there, months of beta tests will follow before Apple makes iOS 18 and the other updates available to the world in September.
