Since Apple first introduced the App Store as part of its assault on the smartphone market, there’s been a handful of apps and games which have come up, and never really gone away.
Angry Birds is probably the best example, with plush toys, phone covers, and even underwear now sporting colorful birds and green pigs.
As well as the likes of Doodle Jump and Tiny Wings, Cut The Rope has been a mainstay amongst iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. The main iteration has been downloaded 100 million times since launch, and the plot is simple – drop/swing a piece of rope-dangled candy into a frog-like creature’s mouth whilst avoiding obstacles such as spikes.
One thing we can learn from the aforementioned games is that as far as mobile devices go, physics-based puzzlers rule the roost. The easy to play, hard to master nature of such titles adds a competitive edge leaving friends, relatives and associates constantly engaged.
Cut The Rope, which IGN voted to be the best game on the iPhone last year, is now making its debut for the Mac. Only last week did Apple unveil Mountain Lion – a very iOS take on OS X which looks to be heading towards an eventually-unified system. The Mac release of the game is optimized for landscape gameplay of up to 2560×1440 pixels – covering every possible inch of the display.
Developer ZeptoLab has reworked some of the levels for more harmonious synchronization with mouses and trackpads – thus this version is not a direct port. If you are indeed one of those competitive folk obsessed with out-gunning or out-achieving your friends, you can currently store and compare stats via Scoreloop, but when Mountain Lion is released with Game Center support, an update will be released to tie Cut The Rope in with Apple’s gaming portal.
Cut The Rope is now available to download at the Mac App Store, and comes pre-loaded with 250 levels to keep you entertained / distracted for the foreseeable future. For a price of just $4.99, it’s a good deal too.
