Apple’s September 12 event is just around the corner and while everyone is very much expecting the unveiling of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineups, there’s more to this event than that. We’re set to see two new Apple Watches launch and details about what they will have to offer have leaked today.
Writing for Bloomberg as part of a wider piece discussing the expectations for the new event, the well-connected Mark Gurman reports that there are a few notable changes to this year’s Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Starting with what won’t change, it appears that the two watches will look like last year’s except new colors and possibly new materials will be involved. There are rumors of a new black Apple Watch Ultra, for example.
Moving on to what’s changing, Apple is expected to offer a new, faster chip in the upgraded models of these watches. That’s expected to tie into a new focus on performance.
Gurman also says that the new watches will get some upgraded sensors, including the heart rate sensor that makes Apple Watches so useful.
The watches will also get various sensor and internal component upgrades with a focus on speed, efficiency and accuracy, including a new version of Apple’s optical heart rate sensor.
Other changes include a new 3D-printed case, starting with the stainless steel models of the Apple Watch Series 9. “Apple is planning to shift the second-generation Ultra to this process next year as well,” Gurman adds.
The same report also claims that Apple is getting ready to ditch some of its leather bands, just like similar reports that there will be no leather iPhone 15 cases this year in an attempt to further its environmental chops.
As part of that effort, Apple is shifting away from some of its leather watch bands. Signs of that change are already emerging: The company recently cut prices by up to 90% on some of its leather straps and Hermes-branded watch bands in an internal employee store.
Apple’s September 12 event is now just days away and we can expect to learn more about all of this soon enough. But as important as the Apple Watches are, all eyes are sure to be on those new iPhones come next week.
