Apple’s Vision Pro Headset Has Some Features ‘Left Out,’ Report Claims

Apple’s Vision Pro headset was announced during the WWDC 2023 event on June 5 and it showed off plenty of things that should be enough to get people excited for the new hardware.

But a new report suggests that there are plenty of things that didn’t make the unveiling but might still happen before the headset goes on sale in early 2024.

That’s according to a report from The Information by Wayne Ma, who says that there were some features that Apple had planned but ultimately didn’t happen. Or at least, haven’t yet. Fitness and wellness apps are some examples of that, May says. Apple did show off a new meditation app, but there’s thought to have been more.

At one point, though, Apple planned many more fitness and wellness applications for the headset, according to former employees who worked on the device. Some employees discussed collaborations with brands such as Nike for working out with the headset, while others investigated face cushions that were better suited for sweaty, high-intensity workouts, said one of the people. One proposal even involved wearing and interacting with content on the Vision Pro while on a stationary bike, a former employee said.

There was also talk of a new full-body tracking technology for things like FaceTime calls, but Apple still needs some more time before that is ready. It’s thought that Apple’s lack of full-body tracking technology has caused the issue here, but the company continues to work on it ahead of next year’s launch.

Apple has yet to complete full-body tracking, which it had planned for the device, according to multiple people who worked on it. That feature is among the reasons the device has two cameras that point downward and can see the wearer’s body and hands. Apple representatives told developers earlier this month that full-body tracking wouldn’t be available when the device ships next year, according to screenshots of an Apple-hosted Slack conversation following the Vision Pro launch event.

Even without these features the Vision Pro headset demonstration that we all saw at WWDC was still mightily impressive, and it bodes well if there are still some more features that the company is thought to be hard at work on.
