Apple is expected to move the iPhone to USB-C starting next year after the EU passed a law that requires all phones to use a common connector.
But while the iPhone 15 might benefit from a new connector, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that only two of them will get high-speed options.
Writing to Twitter, Kuo says that only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will support high-speed transfer, while the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will maintain the slower USB 2.0 connectivity speed that Lightning offers today.
While that’s bad news for buyers of Apple’s non-Pro models, those who do stump up the cash for Apple’s best models will reportedly get transfer speeds in or around that of USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt. That means that transfers could move at up to 40Gb/s, whereas USB-2 is limited to just 480Mb/s.
That’s a huge difference for owners of the Pro models and makes sense given the 48-megapixel cameras that they are likely to use. The same cameras are in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max today, creating ProRAW photos of up to 100MB each. If Apple’s next high-end iPhones also support improved video capabilities with Apple ProRes as they do today, even larger video files will be in play.

2H23 new high-end iPhones' wired transfer speed will likely improve markedly, benefiting the growth of the high-speed transfer IC design industry. Apple's existing suppliers (e.g., Parade, Asmedia, Genesys Logic, Renesas, etc.) are expected to be leading beneficiaries.— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) November 17, 2022
Apple is expected to ship the new iPhones starting in September 2023, meaning there are still plenty of months for the rumors to and leaks to pile up before then.
