Apple Working On Shortening ‘Hey Siri’ Command Trigger To Just ‘Siri’

Apple is reportedly working on a new trigger phrase for Siri that would replace the famous “Hey Siri” that people have now been using for years.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, writing via the Power On newsletter, Apple is keep to remove the “Hey” part of the phrase to make it quicker and easier for people to talk to Siri.

“The company is working on an initiative to drop the “Hey” in the trigger phrase so that a user only needs to say “Siri”—along with a command,” Gurman says.

However, he goes on to add that “while that might seem like a small change, making the switch is a technical challenge that requires a significant amount of AI training and underlying engineering work.”

Apple is reportedly already testing the new “Siri” phrase internally and using its own employees to train the AI to listen out for it. The use of a single-word phrase isn’t new, of course, with Alexa and Cortana having already offered such a feature. Google Assistant does require “OK Google,” however.

While people can of course press a button on most Apple devices in order to invoke Siri, being able to do so hands-free is a big deal and while removing a single word from the trigger phrase won’t change the world, it would be a welcome move. Especially if it makes Siri better at dealing with chained questions and answers, for example.
