If you thought texting and driving was a dangerous combination, wait till you hear about texting and walking! Yes, while it isn’t as risky as texting and driving, texting and walking has its own risks: bumping into lamp posts, tripping on the stairs and getting hit by a car are just a few of the potential risks. The greatest countermeasure against this is, of course, to simply not text and walk but not everyone is willing to do that. Keeping that in mind, a new app called Transparent Screen has been released on Android that lets you see through your device’s screen for potential obstacles that you may come across while walking on the streets. You want to use your phone while you’re walking? Make your screen transparent!
This app gives you the opportunity to use your phone as usual, while being able to see the image of your camera transparently on the entire screen.
We’ve tested the app on a Galaxy S II on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and can confirm that it works as advertised. For the “transparency effect”, the app overlays the live-view through your device’s rear camera. It has a simple UI and comes with options like being able to change transparency level, resolution and stop functionality when the display turns off etc. Because the app uses your device’s camera and makes good use of your device’s processing power, it does take a toll on your device’s battery life.
Once again, we suggest you simply do not text while walking, but if you do, consider using Transparent Screen to reduce risk of injury.
