Apple’s base iPad has now received a big new update for 2022, adding new colors, a new design, and an increase in price.
Starting with the good stuff, Apple’s new iPad has a larger 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display with almost 4 million pixels.
It’s backed by four new colors including blue, pink, yellow, and silver. Brightness sits at 500 nits, but that isn’t all that’s changed on the front of this thing. The Touch ID Home button is gone, with biometric sensing now moved to the button on the top of the display.
Apple has now also moved the FaceTime camera to the side of the tablet, not on the top. That’s a move that it thinks will make it better suited to being used on video calls when in landscape mode, like when connected to a keyboard or standing in a dock.
Inside, Apple has brought an improved A14 Bionic chip to the iPad, upgrading it over the A13 that was previously in place. Apple says that it’s 5x faster than the best-selling Android tablet, which is quite the boast. Around the back, there’s support for 4K video and 240-fps slo-mo, too.
In terms of connectivity, Apple’s new iPad comes with WiFi 6 and 5G connectivity, while the bottom of the new iPad includes a USB-C port rather than the Lightning that we might have come to expect from previous tablets.
The new iPad goes on sale on October 26 with pre-orders available now. Prices start at $449 for the 64GB version, while a 256GB option is available for those who want to go that route.
