Apple has today released the fourth beta of iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 to developers, an update that is expected to be made available to the world later this year.
The new update, which has been in beta testing for a number of weeks now, will build on the existing iOS 16 update, while iPadOS 16 never actually shipped. Instead, iPadOS 16.1 will be the first to arrive at some point this month.
Developers who already have the correct development profile installed on their iPhone and iPad can now download and install this latest build, while IPSW files are also set to be made available for those who prefer to update their test devices manually.
It’s too early to tell what will be in this latest beta specifically, but iOS 16.1 is set to be a big one for iPhone users.
The iOS 16.1 update will add support for Live Activities, while Clean Energy Charging is a feature that will charge the iPhone during hours when cleaner energy is being used. Support for the Matter smarthome standard is also included.
On the iPad, iPadOS 16.1 is set to be the first one to offer Stage Manager, a new multitasking system that allows windows to overlap for the first time. That particular feature has been problematic during testing, but Apple is presumably hopeful of having it ready to go come release time.
