Next-Gen MacBook Air 2022 Announced With All-New M2 Chip, Here Are The Details

Apple’s WWDC22 event is now underway and the opening keynote has come to a conclusion with a ton of new software and some new hardware announced.

The most interesting of the new hardware announcements is an updated Apple silicon chip, dubbed M2, and a new MacBook Air that will house it.

The new MacBook Air comes in a 13-inch model and is powered by that new M2 chip. Users can expect up to 18 hours of battery life from a single charge, something that can be done using MagSafe charging once again.

Apple says the new machine will also come in four colors — Silver, Space Gray, Midnight, and Starlight.

The updated model, complete with notch, will be 20% smaller by volume which helps make this a MacBook Air by more than just name.

Built from the ground up around M2, MacBook Air has an entirely new design that is remarkably thin from every angle. It measures just 11.3 mm thin and is only 2.7 pounds, and features a durable, all-aluminum unibody enclosure that feels incredibly solid and is built to last. This thin and light design integrates its components so efficiently that it results in an astonishing 20 percent reduction in volume. With the power efficiency of M2, all of the capabilities of MacBook Air are built into a silent, fanless design. In addition to silver and space gray, MacBook Air is now available in two new finishes — midnight and starlight.

The new Liquid Retina display supports 500 nits of brightness and is 25% brighter than the previous version.

It also supports 1 billion colors, making it perfect for video and photo editing. The updated models also includes a 1080p FaceTime HD camera and a four-speaker sound system.

That new M2 chip means for the fastest MacBook Air yet. It’s almost 40% faster than the previous model in terms of editing complex timelines in Final Cut Pro, with applying filters and effects in Adobe Photoshop set to be up to 20% faster. That’s all thanks to the M2’s 100GB/s of unified memory, eight CPU cores, and ten GPU cores.

The machine also support a new 35W Dual USB-C port compact power adapter so you can charge two devices at a time. Support for fast charging is also present if you pair it up with the 67W adapter.

The new MacBook Air starts at $1,199 and will begin arriving to customers starting next month.

13-inch MacBook Pro with M2

As expected Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Pro now packs the new powerful M2 chip as well. With up to 20 hours of battery life, Apple claims the M2 chip makes the 13-inch MacBook Pro 40% faster than the previous gen model. The addition of the M2 chip also makes it possible for Apple to slap in 24GB of RAM in this compact notebook.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 starts at $1,299 and will begin arriving to customers starting next month.
